About me: AA by next year, low income, Missouri resident, 4.0 GPA or closer to that.
Desired Major: Linguistics
Criterion: affordability.
1- Yale (impossible but give it a try)
2- MIT (impossible but give it a try
3- WashU (extremely difficult)
4- Georgetown (extremely difficult)
5- University Of Missouri-Columbia (possible)
6- University of Missouri-Saint Louis (possible)
Besides UMiss campuses, none of the schools you have selected are particularly known for affordability (especially for transfer students).
While I don’t think you should take Yale, WashU or Georgetown out, you should take advantage of your CC’s resources (CC’s usually pay for your application fees), and apply to more schools.
I recommend you take out MIT, considering they’re an institution focused on mathematics and science.
Beyond your current list (and tuition), I also recommend looking at schools situated in cities with low cost of living.
I didn’t know CCs pay the fees thank you so much for that. However, I don’t wanna waste much time applying here and there especially that it takes a long time of research, I rather spend that time studying you know. Also, I don’tt know which university can be affordable or not so I have decided unless it is a very good university, I will go to Mizzou. It’s a small city as you said and the cost of living is not bad at all.
Also, I have learned that if you make less than 30k most of these universities guarrantees that it will be a tuition free or you or you will end up paying a very small amount. I am not sure though, I only tried the net price calculator and read a thing or two on their website.
As of the MIT I totally agree with you, in fact I am not enthusiastic about it at all, it’s just that they have one of top linguistics programs in the country and I thought I will try anyway.
I really appreciate your help, thanks
^^^Agree Linguistics program is top notch at MIT and may be a way to distinguish your appllication since so many others will be STEM related.
I agree on MIT. Also, their language and CS unit is incredible.
You should add a few from
Brandeis
Carleton
Dartmouth
Emory
Macalester
Northeastern
Pomona
Barnard
Wellesley
They’re more likely than your “impossible” yet stronger than Mizzou.
Oh! Really?! Never knew MIT had such a great linguistics program…
In that case, you should keep MIT.
@MYOS1634 your list is good (though I wouldn’t add Emory, since OOS tuition is fairly high, and Atlanta is not a cheap place to live.)
Also, @starlight111 even though you’ve talked about your financial standing in past posts, I think you shouldn’t limit yourself by tuition and cost TOO much. I know your financial standing impels you to do so, but I recommend you apply first, and as I always say, apply broadly.
Once you apply, and get your acceptances, THEN you start looking at costs.
I have just found out that Kansas City gurrantees free tuition through grants scholarships and work study to all low income students, unfortunately they don’t have my major there. What do you think of UCLA (or any other UC)…
You’re not instate for California are you?
If not, UC s are out if the question since they have NO financial aid for OOS applicants.
no financial aid at all, that’s cruel…
Well, they’re public universities that California tax payers have paid for, so they don’t want to subsidize OOS students when there’s not enough space at UC’s already for all the talented Californian students - many majors are majorly “impacted”.
Yes that’s true! do you wanna major in linguistics too
