Hello! :)

I understand that if you are accepted into the PLME program, you can major in anything you want, as long as you take the required classes to proceed to their med school.

So…has anyone heard of a PLME student majoring in Art? Yes, I know that your major is a free for all at PLME, but I am just wondering if adcoms will think I am not serious about medicine if I apply to PLME ED with mostly art awards and an intention to major in art. thinking I’m not serious=reject me

Please answer
Thank you! :D

Majoring in art or anything similar will not hurt your application. (and might even help) However, you will need to show that you still have the strong science background, will be able to do well in the science classes and have a strong background exposure to medicine or research that correlates to a medical bent. If you don’t have this background yet, you can still concentrate in art and fulfill your premed requirements at Brown also, but would be less likely to get into the PLME program.
I know there are current /past PLMEs who have concentrated in languages, performing arts, art history etc. either as a primary, or second concentration.

if you don’t have a single medical EC on your application then it might raise some flags but otherwise it’s fine.

“if you don’t have a single medical EC on your application then it might raise some flags”

I think that’s my problem. Other than

—officer in cancer club and premed club for 4 years (president of both senior year); invite doctors as guest speakers, invite local clinics/hospitals for school wide health fairs

—cleaning/setting up tools and x-rays for a dentist one summer

—health education program at hospital; mandatory community project by the end of Nov 2013

—2 years Toshiba Exploravision honorable mention

—physical therapy/exercise for developmentally disabled

I don’t have a single legit medical EC along the lines of lab internships or research.

Any explanation for why I am choosing PLME or why my heart is set on becoming a surgeon will come from my essays.

Yes my application will raise flags. :(

Any suggestions for improvement? Thank you so much!

The essays etc are important, but Brown’s PLME program is likely to “categorize” you as passionate, but not likely “exposed” enough to medicine to make this certain a far reaching decision this early in the game for you. If you think you are ready to “set” your career, and really know that PLME is better for you than “standard premed” then you should do some in-depth exposure activity now to help solidify that decision in your and adcoms minds. This would likely mean that you should not apply ED, to get more onto your resume. This summer is not over. Find 1-2 surgeons who would be willing to have you shadow extensively, and volunteer to help out in their offices. (120 hours or so?) Look for something medically related to start in the fall. You might still find an after school research opportunity. Or maybe a volunteer clinic, or rescue squad, etc. Brown will want to see that you took initiative, and had passion via demonstrating it, not just talk.

thank you BrownAlumParent

I am taking your advice and asking a reconstructive surgeon if I could shadow him. If he says yes, I’ll shadow/volunteer extensively from now until I accumulate 120 hrs or so of experience.

I’ll look through old CC threads to figure out how to intern at a research lab too, since it’s too late for a summer research program.

I agree with everything that BrownAlumParent has said, as this board’s resident PLME (and music concentrator!)

Having diverse interests like art and medicine are what the PLME is all about.
(I was worried as well when I put down Theatre Arts as my concentration)

Maybe even send in a video supplement of you and your work? Anything to help them remember you!
