So, is it a good idea to write how interested I am in computer science, and how PLME will help me study it while making progress towards becoming a doctor? It seems like every time I tell people that I want to study cs, they say, “are you sure you wanna be a doctor? have you looked into bioinformatics?” and so I just wanna preface this thread by saying, yes I have looked into bioinformatics, and yes I am 100% sure I want to be a doctor.

I know Brown wants you to want to study a liberal art, but CS is really my other passion behind medicine, and I want Brown to know that, but not be turned off towards me because its a technical course. Would they be turned off to me because my passion is in computer science, and not a liberal art per se?

PLME is not just about studying a “liberal art” while on the med school track; in fact, many PLMEs do concentrate in bio/neuro because that’s truly what they’re passionate about. What PLME is really about is giving you the opportunity to explore these areas. For me it’s music, but for you it may be CS. Own up to your passions and tell Brown that they’re what you want to explore.

If med schools didn’t already require so many classes I would want them to require CS as well. No reason you can’t pursue CS as an undergrad and end up as a doctor, don’t hide it. As long as you have the medical ECs no one will doubt your commitment.

And make sure in your essays you do a good job of explaining your connection between the 2 in a way that preempts any of those questions that you get. Not directly rebutting them, but explaining why the computer background is right for what you want to do in medicine. If you have very well thought out plans for your future in medicine, (or medical research or whatever) it will add to the information PLME admissions needs to see that you understand what becoming a doctor is about.
