Plymouth State MT

Hey! I just wanted to leave a little post about my school, Plymouth State University! I applied last year to several MT schools, and ended up at PSU. And I couldn't be happier! I'd like to suggest to any of you to look into it. We have a terrific group of people here. Last week our department performed "Into the Woods", and as I watched my classmates, I felt so proud of our department. There was so much incredible, real talent on that stage. Even though we are a smaller program, not considered as "competitive" as some of the others, we ROCK. I love it; I feel like the training is great, people here are immensely dedicated to their work, the faculty is outstanding and extremely kind, and the school and community is a really nice, and comfortable place to be. So, don't hesitate to look into it! I just want to see our program grow and introduce it to people who aren't familiar with it! Because, I love it, and I am so proud.

Thanks for your post, Amy. KatMT has also mentioned this Universtiy as a high quality but smaller program with a later last audition date. About how many students are admitted per class? Can you describe the dance program? It is wonderful to hear from a student who is very happy in one of the less well known programs. I would like to have my D email you.

Hey! The program claims to admit 6-8 per year or 8-10, something like that. This year they ended up with 12 Freshman MT majors. I am a transfer, so I am not exactly part of the freshman class.
The dance program is actually quite good. The major only requires a fairly basic dance knowledge, as in, you are only required to take the beginning levels of Jazz, Tap, and Ballet. However, there is a dance minor program, and plenty of courses offered, so a student can take as many, and as difficult of dance classes as their schedule allows. I am going to declare a dance minor shortly, actually. The instruction is really great. Right now I'm in a class called Dance Styles for Musical Theatre, which is the most fun But we have really excellent jazz and modern...I haven't signed up for ballet until next year.

Another little tidbit about Plymouth....a lot of MT majors opt to double major in Voice Performance and Pedagogy. It's fairly easy to do, if you are willing to work hard, but many of the classes overlap, and a lot of students like having the extra major to help them upon graduation. My boyfriend is doing this double major. It is great if you really enjoy classical singing as well as musical theatre rep.

Hi,
I am really interested in PSU dance department and was wondering if you could help anwser some of my questions. How hard is it to get acceptence into the dance department? What general level do they expect you to be at in each style of dance?
Thanks so much!!

Hi -- from what I understand Plymouth State has a dance minor and the option of a self designed inter-disciplinary major. They also have a dance pedagogy curriculum, but I do not know if it is yet a formalized major. You must audition for the dance major -- the dance auditions include combinations that will highlight modern, jazz, and underlying ballet technique.

The woman who runs the program is young, energetic, creative. She is relatively new to Plymouth State... has been there for two years. I am sure that she would be happy to answer questions you may have about the program. I will PM you with her email address.

Good Luck!
