PO Box

The post office at the commons charges 60 dollars for a two person PO box. That's way too expensive. I was planning on sharing a box with a friend. Could I just rent a single person PO box and let my friend receive mail there too? Does anyone have experience with this Post Office?

Per the rental agreement synopsis:

Private mailbox service(s) are for the LESSEE’S USE ONLY.

Lessee agrees Commons Mail Services will not accept mail/parcels for more than two (2) students who have SIGNED the AGREEMENT and prepaid for the private mailbox service.

Lessee will NOT “LOAN” the use of his/her Private Mailbox Service to anyone. To do so may result in the Lessee’s agreement termination of service without recourse.

Can anyone say whether you really need the private mailbox or not?

In last 3 yrs, S2 and majority of his dormmate do not have mail box. You can always send packages (any size including regular envelope) via UPS, Fedex etc which will deliver directly to the dorm with ease. The cost is slightly higher. Note: USPS will not deliver to the dorm. It is quite incovenient if your dorm are not close by the post office or your dorm is not in the “common”.

So if your dorm is in the Commons, it’s easier to receive mail without paying for a mailbox?

Yes. I had UPS drop off a couple packages right at my door. The UPS would literally walk into the dorm and knock on your door.

Think why you need a PO-Box? Majority of the important communication like bank, financial, U communication etc are online. Books order online can easily ship by other carrier. If you have important doc like passport etc, it should have ship to your home instead. Or mail by certified or registered mail which you will need to pick up anyway.

I get a lot letters from my friends in the marines and army and I have a lot of magazine subscriptions, so I would like my own PO box.
