Pokemon?

this may sound like (and possibly be) the nerdiest thread on here but I was wondering if any of the top universities have an organized circuit or “league” for competitive pokemon, VGC, Smogon, you name it. I’m sure there’s something somewhere right???

I don’t think there’s anything like that at any university. I’ve been hearing some colleges are hosting gaming tournaments, though.

[MIT does](MIT Pokémon League).

[Carnegie Mellon](Carnegie Mellon University - Schedule Of Classes) offered a student taught Pokemon 101 class this semester so presumably there are at least a few students who play competitively.

You might want to post this on a Pokemon forum as they would have more detailed information regarding the scenes at various colleges.

A lot of schools are likely to have student organizations for people that play various games like that. My school has a Magic: The Gathering TCG club that meets in the cafeteria once a week for a continuous bracket tournament that progresses throughout the whole semester. I don’t personally play Magic, but I have some friends that are pretty active in the club. There’s also a video game club and an anime club that I’m aware of.

As far as Pokemon specifically is concerned, I’m not really sure. I know that there are definitely plenty of college kids that are into Pokemon though.

Thanks for the information it’s very helpful and I probably will post in a Pokemon forum!!! MIT may be a little reachy for me but it’s interesting that CMU has a class

Wow this is funny I’ve taken a serious interest in pokemon lve been playing the hacks people have made so addicting and fun. I’ve finally learned some of the gen 3 and 4 pokemon I grew up during kanto and johto. I’ve found there’s nothing wrong with revisiting the past.

Oh it’s not the past, and I’m not talking about the lighthearted play-throughs many of us enjoyed in our childhood. There is serious math, serious competitions (money is often included), and a huge community full of dedicated strategists. To the more serious in the community, it is taken as a type of chess but on steroids. If your into strategy I highly recommend entering the community if your time permits! I can’t play that often because of basketball, student government, and my course load but it is definitely a fun, welcoming, and overall engaging community.

I was curious so I googled whether Cornell (where I attend) has a club, and apparently they do: http://thepokemonleagueatcornell.hostoi.com

There’s a decent Smogon contingent at Berkeley and also at UMCP. I’ve heard that Berkeley has had a Pokemon decal in recent years (basically a student-taught Pokemon course) and that may be for competitive battling.
