Poker as EC?

If you are invited to the WPT or place in some tournament.. would i be able to put that on my resume for transferring purposes?

What about for my internship resume? I mean.. i know that poker is frowned upon still in society but it's a big part of who i am and what i've done. Any comments?

i wouldn't put that in there...and i do well playing 5/10 NL and 10/20 NL online

While your poker accomplishments are certainly notable, I don't think the college resume is the place for them....Obviously the WPT's a big deal, but listing poker as one of your big/standout ECs would almost be like writing an essay about what beer pong's taught you about leadership (which could totallly be done, it'd just be risky....)

dont put that in there...thats not cool lol keep it out of 'who you are' bc its still associated with gambling..and subconsciously or not, they'll look at your application and tie your EC with casinos and gambling..and its not impressive in terms of your goals in life. good luck and dont put it in there unless its like your only ec.

although if it is clearly a passion and you can also persuade them its not an addiction, they like to know that. Sure, it won't get you in but they like to see you REALLY enjoy things

Put it in if you want to get rejected.

It is similar to applying to HAAS, and be like "yeah, I have been dealing crack since junior high".

hahah

or applying as an english major and saying you've been writing racist poetry and winning kkk poetry slams since childhood

lol iono but i think thas pretty impressive
wanna play poker w/ me?

hey crack dealing is a legitimate business enterprise.

hobo, while your username gives you street cred, you betray your ignorance with that last post.
crack dealing isn't legit. it makes you almost NO money (unless you're at the very top of the operation, in which case you won't actually be dealing the crack)...and it's dangerous (violence, not to mention the fact that you could be incarcerated at any time). It really isn't all that legitimate. because you clearly were not joking :D

i see you've read freakonomics.

it is legitimate because when you're at teh top you got to deal with your suppliers (supply chain management + diplomacy) you got to set your prices at a street level (economics) and ya gotta recruit people and place them strategically on street corners (management). i'd say a crack gang leader has a lot of credibility in the business world :)

whatever i'm more into the crack part anyway

I wouldn't recommend you putting it in resume or in your application, but it'd certainly make an interesting essay topic. It'd be pretty smart if you can somehow relate your poker experience to how you realized that chances are big part of life and that you are willing to take risk to get something bigger in return... or somethign along that line. It'd make you look like a statistic freak, and it'll be even better if you were applying to a business major.. cuz after all, business is a risk. :P

well if the OP was really that crazy at poker, he wouldn't have to go to college :)

Serious poker experience on internship resume may work really well for some but it is definitely a two-edge sword. If you have other ECs to highlight, then experience like WPT will most definitely help. You will be surprised how many recruiters/managers/people-who-will-hire-you are poker players themselves.

BUT, if you don't have anything else to highlight in your resume, then readers will have to assume where you been logging all your time ... and that's won't be good.

wow i'm impressed. this picture of matt damon suddenly pops up in my head. but put it in your essay! it can be all Bringing Down the House..minus the whole cheating thing..

oooo rounders was a good movie (off topic)
