Just curious. How feasible would it be to double major in Political Science and Economics at UCSD? Both majors interest me, and I am currently looking at Law School in the future. However, if that doesn't pan out, I still would like a degree in a business oriented department. So, my question pertains to graduation requirements and rigor of a double major in these two fields. I currently have quite a few AP and IB credits, and I would enter as a freshman next year, with exemptions from a few GE requirements and elective credits. Would it be possible to graduate in four years? Would the course load kill my G.P.A.? Are there any double majors out there that can attest to this at UCSD? Also, although I am in advanced math course right now, I am definitely a linguistically oriented person. I do not fail to grasp the material in mathematics, but it is something I have to put much more effort into in comparison to my other courses. How rigorous is the mathematics requirement for Economics? Obviously, it would require a greater foundation than Political Science, but what courses would they be, and are they difficult for a "mathematically challenged" person, such as myself?

Law school? Don’t double major. They don’t give your profile any extra weight if you take a harder courseload and your GPA suffers for it. Take whichever is easier for you (I’m guessing PoliSci) and as many ‘Easy-A’ courses as you can. Take a look at the Law School forum in CC. Almost all admissions can be predicted solely on GPA and LSAT score (soft factors like work experience, research experience, sports, awards, etc., don’t really hold much weight for law admissions).

Business? Neither really excels at business. You can prepare yourself for a future in the corporate world with any major. Economics students don’t necessarily have an advantage over others to land an internship anywhere in the SD area since most don’t specify a required major. A degree won’t get you a job nowadays – it’s your past work experience/internships that will.

Alright. Out of the two, I enjoy learning about Political Science far more. So, would a Political Science Major with an Econ Minor be a good combo? The main reason I’m asking is my father thinks that a Political Science major isn’t very practical. I’ve tried to dissuade him, but he wants me to, at least, minor in something like economics. How is the minor?

The minor is easy, but in all honesty, Economics is NOT practical. You’re still learning about micro and macro theory. Major/minor in it if you like it and/or can maintain a 4.0 in it.
