CMU is not exactly on my top list of programs, but it's certainly not bad. Good school overall. Don't worry too much.

CMU actually has a very strong economics program. In fact, several Nobel prize laureates in economics (Franco Modigliani, Robert Lucas Jr., Herb Simon and Finn Kydland) were at some point in the CMU faculty. Other prominent economists who teach/have taught at CMU include Allan Meltzer and Ben McCallum.

Your teacher is right when he/she says that CMU is best known for its engineering and computer science programs (several of which are ranked among the top 10 or even top 3 in the country). There is however much more to CMU than just engineering, robots, and computers. In addition to strong programs in economics and business, the university also excels in applied mathematics/logic, psychology, philosophy, statistics, architecture, and drama. It is also generally good in design and most fine arts. The natural sciences departments (physics, biological sciences, chemistry) are somewhat weaker, but have been gaining in prestige recently, especially in biological sciences due to a major strategic expansion initiative led by university president Jared Cohon and closer association with the UofPitt 's medical school.

I should clarify...and not post late nights while studying for finals.

CMU is not high on my list for poli sci. It's economics dept. is quite good.
