Economics in Carnegie Mellon

Is economics any good in Carnegie Mellon?
I think its computer science and engineering overshadow all other majors except for business…
I’m thinking of transferring right away to business if I find out economics in CMU isn’t that good…

Also, I know all the employers know CMU cuz of its Compsci and engineering…but do normal Americans also know of CMU?
Thanks!

Economics is generally thought to be one of the easier majors at CMU, which doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s not what CMU is known for, but you would still get a great education. I know plenty of CMU students who are majoring in non-technical fields who absolutely love and are satisfied with their major.

Depends who you consider ‘normal Americans’ to be- It’s not a very well-known school, but it has a great reputation.

^ I disagree with you @Knittergirrl Econ is a tough major and CMU has had a 19 Nobel Laureates, 10 of which are in Economics dating from 1978 to 2013.

@TiggyB62 I’m not saying that it’s in any way a ‘bad’ or otherwise unworthy major. Maybe we’ve just heard different things from different people. I’m sure it’s not easy, as nothing at CMU is, but I know a few current students/recent graduates from the Econ major, and they’ve indicated that the rigor is nothing like that of the Computer Science or Electrical & Computer Engineering majors.

My original post was meant to say that no, CMU is not known for their Econ program, but that it’s still a good major and the OP would get a great education there, even if it does not have the rigor that other CMU programs are known for.

(If it’s worth anything, I’m in another Dietrich major which is considered to be among the ‘easier’ at CMU. I love it, but will fully acknowledge that the rigor is nowhere near that of some other majors.)

@kinttergirrl of course. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.
