I’m applying as a junior transfer to Brown. I’m a poli sci major and I lean quite left. I have a personal statement essay on an interesting topic thats about my life and past…blah blah blah. I don’t talk about my politics in it however.

The thing is, I run a political web-site. It show my “passion” for government and my chosen major. A huge understatement would be to say that it shows my bias.

Is it a good idea to list this(by name) on my app? I would like to b/c it shows my commitment to my beliefs, reflects my hard work, and communicates something about me that isn’t otherwise explained in my app.

I realize Brown is home to a fairly liberal student body, but does that go for the adcom as well? IF there is any chance the “tasteful” but biased content might hurt my chances, I won’t name it.

I think it's fine. I have kind of a similar situation; i have interned on multiple political campaigns and it is obvious that i am a democrat from which candidates i worked for... i think as long as you don't talk about it in a way that is offensive to a particular person (like don't get in a political argument w/ your interviewer...) They are going to assume that anyone who is interested in political science has some kind of bias.

I say definitely give the address. The key to a unique application is showing a passion for something- as your passion is politics, the website is further evidence of it. My application showed a very extreme bias- I am the co-president of the Young Greens Club, was a Nader campaign worker, and my personal statement was about being a vegan. I was accepted in the early decision round with only average test scores, so I definitely think my clear focus, despite its direction, got me in. Don't worry about political views in your application.

"My application showed a very extreme bias- I am the co-president of the Young Greens Club, was a Nader campaign worker, and my personal statement was about being a vegan."

How does it logically follow that vegans have a political bias?

Yeah, if it shows you're passionate. And chances are the admissions officer will be left-leaning too. Even if they're not, they'll recognize that your talents and passions will fit right in with the Brown community.

But the op was concerned about political bias, not "extreme bias" in general. I mean, if I had an extreme bias towards good academics I wouldn't worry about the adcoms judging me poorly. Im sorry, but it seemed pretty clear you were meaning political bias even if you didnt say it explicity.

If you considered it political in the first place, then you should've been able to see that my vegan essay builds upon the liberal bias of my application. Also, as far as I know, one cannot have a bias towards "academics" (though, if one could, it may lead the adcom to fear that the person is too focused on academics, creating a negative influence).

As for the OP, I love your website. It shows effort, dedication, passion, and true social/political awareness. After seeing it, I definitely think you should give Brown the address- no question about it.

For those who wish to see the site... it's just the OPs username.... blunitedstates.com

the site is quite new and the original post quite misunderstood. i appreciate the feedback on it - even the constructive criticisms - but the question was whether to show bias on an app or not through this medium. i do have 2-3 months b4 it'll be viewed by adcoms and i assure my critics the "substance" will be there. as a matter of fact, i've linked with a political forum site just this evening, bringing a debate forum to the site(available in 1-2 days)

i guess you'll all just have to keep checking it to make sure i keep my word. (hint, hint)

I'm a republican applicant to Brown, but I liked the site. Sure it wasn't my beliefs, but it was funny. I would have appreciated more facts and less of the "under-hand" humor. I'd definitely put it on the application though.
