Thanks for looking at my post. I have a small dilemma that is really confusing and tough to figure out what to do. At our school we are having a Mock Presidential Debate with one person as McCain and one person as Obama. I am super into politics like I watch fox news at least 2 hours a day. I am also a conservative and although I feel there is nothing wrong with where I stand in my political views, the teachers and students at my school are about 80% Democrat and 20% Republican. And about 50% of those 80% of democrats are die-hard liberals who hate me because I am a republican. What I am asking is if by participating in the debate I am putting into jeopardy my college recs from my teachers and the way they grade me (at our school if your liked by your teachers you have a HUGE advantage). I am also class president and wouldnt want to put my position into jeopardy as I run for student govt president next year. If anyone has any advice I would definately appreciate it thanks.

I don't see why participating in a mock debate should hurt you in any way. After all, if you're as politically active as you claim to be, then most people already know this about you and taking part in a mock debate shouldn't be slanderous. However, if teachers view you differently solely on political belief, then I would seriously question their professionalism. As for students, obviously, they have different motives, but nonetheless, if people/friends already know how conservative you are, partaking in a debate shouldn't have any serious negative effects. Side note: pretty funny how I was practically in the same political environment as you, but yeah, people could care less how conservative I was, as long as my arguments were practical.

thanks tonyt

pnthrs11, don't worry about it. I'm sure you'll be able to find a teacher that can write an excellent rec if your current one manages to hate you (unlikely). I've had an extremist teacher with whom I didn't feel comfortable sharing my views, but that was only one teacher out of many. It's easy to tell. Chances are, you have nothing about which to worry. I don't think your class presidency is really an issue either, as long as you present yourself clearly. If adcoms know about your political affiliation and reject you because of it, you probably shouldn't be at that college anyway.

stating your opinions shouldn't jepordize your cahnce for good recommendations....if it does, then maybe those teachers weren't that great candidates for writing the recommendations in the first place. as for the student gov't thing though, to be honest, your political views, depending on how you present them, could influence what people think of you BUT, if you focus on other things more relating to school in student gov't and what you want to improve and stuff, people should look at that aspect of being president. if that makes any sense at all lol good luck

w.e thanks for those who responded to my question

I wouldn't worry too much about the recs.

As far as worrying about recs...don't. Teachers shouldn't base their opinions on a person's political views.
