Political Essay

Hi everyone, I sorta have a problem with my essay. I started it a few days ago and I'm writing about Taiwan's international status. I've asked a few very knowledgable Taiwanese friends about tihs and they said I gotta be careful with this essay since some schools might think I'll become an activist ("troublemakers" in the eyes of the Pro-China people). or whatever.

My essay has a lot of emotion and passion in it, not so much anything about China's wrongdoings.

What are your opinions of this?? What if a Chinese admission officer see my essay? Should I be concerned?

Lastly, if anyone wants to read my essay...let me know, I need some help =D Thanks!!

My concern is really that your essay will be more a paper on Taiwanese politics and relations with China than it is an essay ABOUT YOU for college applications.

Yea I've finished writing about how I feel about this issue. Now I'm trying to write about communication is the way to resolve everything. and how that is a representative of the kind of relationships i'll have with people. The best way to resolve is to communicate, rather than shaking your fists and not resolving anything. That is what makes a good leader, and I hope my ability to communicate with different parties will be able to lead (xxx school) blah blah

Hi Taiwaneseterror,

Glad to find a fellow Taiwan/Taiwanese American person on this forum. I was wondering if you could e-mail me your essay. I find your chosen name quite amusing as I consider myself a terrorist and a threat to China LOL!

I would try to keep it fairly personalized -- attacking a specific viewpoint argumentatively might be offensive to a small handful of readers, but expressing your feelings and experiences on the subject without challenging the legitimacy of alternative perspectives is generally safe. Err moderate, stay away from the aggressive tone, and you should be fine. Some readers may still disagree with you, but if you execute it well the essay shouldn't spark negative sentiments against you to any substantial degree.
