Politics...

Is politics too risky of an essay topic?, even though it is one of my strongest passions and interests.

I don't think so. As long as you explain your fascination with politics and what drives your passion, what skills you have that are relevant to the courses you want to take etc, I don't think it's a problem at all (as long as you remain objective and don't stray into tirades about why you don't like Bush/Kerry/communists). In fact, if anything I think it's a plus.
Then again I'm not an admissions officer, so my opinion only goes so far.

Ask your guidance counsellor.

Btw, I'm writing my essay as we speak, and in it pretty much all I do is rave about politics. (Mind you I am applying for political science/business programs.)

Politics can be a fantastic topic....demonstrate yoru passion...but avoid downing a certain group, ideal, etc.

not harmful at all
hope so
