1) NO

2) Last year I applied to a safety school, got accepted, and I refused to attend because I wanted to go to one of my dream schools, aka Exeter or Andover (I am a reapplicant)

1) yes Berkshire School
2) Yes if I don’t get into my dream school

I’m now in college, but I can answer this question according to where I was last year.

1) Yes
2) Yes

I thought my safety was an alright place to be. I didn’t only apply to it because it was a safety.

However, if we’re looking at my safest place I applied to (because I was a bit paranoid about my 1st safety, and my GC said I needed another one), I would’ve still answered yes to both questions, though a bit less enthusiastically.

EDIT: Sorry, didn’t notice this was in the prep school forum!

1) Yes
2) No

After visiting the campus and getting a better feel for the school, it was obvious that it was not a good fit for me. It has nothing to do with it being a safety though, it’s just not the school for me.

Did you already apply, before u decided the school was not right for u?

I’m sorry, but I really must ask. Why apply to a safety school if you would not attend, wasting a good little chunk of money on the application, your time on the essays, and the time of the admissions officers for that matter?

I apologize for the coarseness of my wording, but seriously, why?

Well I live overseas and I didn’t know if I would be able to visit the schools at the time and I had already paid for and started my applications before visiting the campuses. If I had known that my father would have taken me to the U.S. to visit the schools, I would have definitely waited to apply until after my visits. I definitely understand what you’re saying.

It seems a little offhanded and delusional to call any school with a 35% acceptance rate a safety. I know many students/parents will argue that somehow these schools are beneath them, but outside the world of CC Prep School Admissions many students with similar (and sometimes better) stats consider these schools their first choice. You’re not going to bless these schools with your presence.

Sorry GMT- I know this post has nothing to do with your question. I saw Berkshire and Safety used in the same sentence and I had trouble walking past it.

1) No
2) No
Personally, I do not believe in safety schools. IMO You either choose a good schools that really suits you, or nothing. A safety school is not the perfect school, that you have always wanted to go, so better stay home and be a reapplicant.

Would Mercersburg be considered a safety?

If yes, then

I wish my dream school could be my safety school. That would be great :D

Yes.
Yes. It may actually be DS’s favorite despite being less “presitigious” than the other 4.

Yes.
Yes. I absolutely love my safety. However, there is one reach school that doesn’t quite fit me.

Yes. I love my safeties completely. Im not really willing to go to my match schools though.

Surprising that so many people like their “safety” school more than their reach school.

That’s probably because “reach schools” are so often chosen for their prestige/selectivity/name recognition as opposed to how well they might suit the individual applicant.
