Somewhere between 15 and 17 for me. i like having options, and there's always the chance that i'll get in almost nowhere.

9-10 for me. I can't imagine applying to any more than that; I already hardly have any time to go through all those applications and essays.

8 for me.

I know someone last year that applied to 39 schools.

13 on my list. If I get into my EA school I might take some schools out.

Luck,
Of course. I go to the University of Washington. I got a 4.0 in highschool and had a 2150 so it was practically auto admission. Even if I was somehow rejected, WSU has a late app. deadline so I could've just applied then. I got the acceptance letter a month or so before WSU's deadline.

I'll be applying to around 16 colleges. Last year a guy from my college with a nearperfect SAT score and a 4 GPA with the hardest courses didn't get into any of the colleges he applied to.So, I'll not be taking any risks. I hope I get in ED

i'm thinking likek 3 safeties, 3 matches, and 3 impossible reaches..

yall guys doin 10+ colleges got issues

that means either u have no clue what u wanna do or u just wanna feel nice lookin at that giant stack of thick acceptance letters in april

....

as for me, 8 colleges is enuff.
i had to narrow it down from 10

im applying to 10 colleges. if i get into a school EA, then i will only apply to 3 more schools and will withdraw the rest

7 and that is my personal limit.

I'm applying to only 4. That's more than enough for me.

4 if accepted EA, 9 if not accepted EA

1 if accepted EA, if not 34531538573857.

10, but 1 if i get accepted ED haha

Just 1 for ED and if I don't get in, 3-4 more.

Our Guidance office says if you apply to more than 10, you haven't done your homework. You need to research the schools more thoroughly and be more selective. They won't "stop" you from applying, though.

GC reccomends 6 - 8: 1-3 reach, 1-3 realistic, 1-2 safety.

My S is applying to 6: 1 reach, 3 realistic, 2 safety. Although even his realistic schools have an accept rate around 40%, and one of his safeties accepts 50%.

Previous post mentions kid with 2150 SAT and 4.0 GPA who didn't get accepted anywhere. My question is: where did he apply? Obviously he didn't read CC and learn the golden rule: "LOVE THY SAFETY."

I'm still a junior but the only ones I'm thinking about applying to is NC State, UNC, and Duke.

"Our Guidance office says if you apply to more than 10, you haven't done your homework. You need to research the schools more thoroughly and be more selective."

I really hate this attitude. There are definitely cases in which it's true, but I know more people who applied to 2 or 3 schools and hadn't done their homework (people who fixated on a certain college early even though it was totally wrong for them, or just applied to state colleges because all their friends were going to UMass, etc.) than those who applied to 10 and hadn't. I personally am applying to 11 schools because I have so many different life paths that I am attracted to, that I'm interested in, and I don't feel I need to succumb to the pressure to 100% decide my life right at this exact moment in the fall when I'm stressed enough already. Let the chips fall where they may among my options and I'll pick from the winners in April.

Whoa...10 colleges??? Don't those app fees um...add up?!?!

I'm only applying to 6!

I have 9 right now, I must eliminate one, since my HS has a quota of how many colleges to which one can apply. If I get in at my EA choice, I am ripping up all my other application forms and heading over the school's online store and buying up that merchandise. But if I get into my EA choice, I am then going to apply to a conservatory for hecks. And perhaps cry over the fact that I am not going to my second choice school that I would love if not for their possibly up in the air financial aid.
