Poll: in state or out of state?

Which do you prefer? Staying in state for college or traveling out of state? Feel free to leave your reasons too!

I’m from California but I want to go out of state for college, I think it’s a perfect opportunity to really become my own person and discover what I really want in life. I hope to go either Midwest or east coast.

Many prefer to go out of state, but for financial reasons stay instate

Out of state since I’m international.

Out of state because of a lack of good instate options other than Brown, which is a reach

I’d really love to go out of state since my state is so small. I want to live somewhere else to see what it’s like at least once in my life.

I’m a senior in California, and I will be going out-of-state for college come Fall.

Not a good idea to rule out either, since more important aspects like affordable price and desired academics can be found at either.

If price was NOT an issue, what would you prefer

Out of state. I think it’s always cool to experience another part of the country and sometimes be the one to tell other people what’s it like “back where I’m from…” and have people be interested. My current college I almost 8 hours away from home, the downsides of course being travel and not being able to go home during the weekends

I want to go out of state because the Midwest doesn’t really interest me anymore. I’d rather spend my four years in a place I haven’t had a whole lot of experience with. Plus, if you’ve seen one Midwestern state, you’ve seen 'em all, in my experience.

Let’s be clear, going out of state means something very different in California and Texas than in Rhode Island or Delaware. The former states are massive and even going to an instate school can require 8-12 hours or driving. On the other hand, going out of state in a place like Delaware could mean a 30 min drive to a neighboring city. A better question would be how far from home do you want to be?

Personally I’m from Southern California and went OOS although I wouldn’t have minded going to school in Central or Northern California since both parts of the state are at least a three hour drive from my house.

I live in Virginis where there are a lot of great colleges. Because of that, my philosophy is that I’m only going to go OOS if it’s for a top private school.

I don’t really care which - I have an option for doing either one - but I will probably go out of state because I can get a good scholarship and there’s a good program at the OOS school for the degree I want.
