I’ve never played polo before, but I’ve ridden horses for 13 years. How possible would it be for me to learn polo at Cornell or join the team?
It is a varsity sport and a pretty small team. Probably not great chances – it would be easier if it were a club sport.
@vany1909 Contact the Cornell coach directly to learn more about the team and how to try out, if he/she thinks you would have a chance. Find contact info on the website or call Cornell for it. I went to Cornell, and I didn’t know there was a polo team! There might not be too many people who could realistically answer your question on this website. I am guessing that you might be able to learn polo at Cornell, though. One or two PE classes are required. Maybe you could ask the polo coach or the PE Dept Coordinator to create a special polo PE course, if there isn’t one already. If they are reluctant, ask if you could do some kind of self-study with the polo team - a one-time deal. My understanding is that you can take things like “Meditation” for PE, so I would think polo would be possible!
My D tried out for the polo team. Although she has ridden a lot, she has no polo experience. She did make it; I think they are looking for great riders for a variety of duties, and I’m sure it would be a great experience. However, since the actual number of players is small, the odds of actually competing if you have never played are pretty slim… If you are a good hunter-jumper rider, try out for the Varsity Equestrian team. They need riders of all levels, and if you have not competed in rated shows but ride well, you would be in great demand! There is also a club Dressage team. Good luck with whatever you choose!
