I was wondering how close Pomona is to LA and beaches. How easy is it to get there and how often do people usually go?
Two to three hours by train unless you have a car and possibly close to that even if you do. When we visited it was obvious not many students even went to LA, let alone the beach. And this is not unusual even at Boston College which is just a few miles from Boston and on a train line, very few students bothered. If you want beaches go to the University of Miami. Don’t pick your school based on area attractions you think you might go to.
Actually the Metrolink train from Claremont to Union Station is only about 55 min, and some students do use it to get to internships in LA (along with Zip Cars). But yeah, it’s not something that my Pomona kid or friends did very frequently. On the other hand, they did take advantage of quite a few of Pomona’s “47 things trips” to various places on the “Sage Coach.” For instance, this semester there have been trips to Newport Beach, the Long Beach Aquarium, and an Angels game, all for real cheap. But agree, you’re busy enough with classes and stuff that “area attractions” ended up not being as important as any of my kids thought they would be when picking a college.
thanks this helps a lot!
My daughter occasionally goes to LA for concerts or other activities, but each year she has done it less. Her academic time commitments have increased each year at Pomona.
