On the Pomona Transfer app, it states that they want recommendation letters from only professors. TA references can only supplement but cannot replace the recommendations. Problem is, I go to a huge school and from the courses I took last semester, I only know one professor well. I was planning on asking that professor and another TA that really likes me as a student... but now I'm short a recommender for Pomona. None of the other professors in my classes know me... my math teacher MIGHT sort of recognize me because I showed up to office hours several times and asked questions, but I have never really TALKED to him, and plus he has like 600 students so I doubt he's going to remember me. Any advice on this situation?

Hey!

I am a sophomore transfer student at Pomona right now and I ran into this problem last year. I too went to a big school and was planning on having my TA write one of my letters. I called Pomona and I spoke to someone in admissions. Basically Pomona said that I should have the professor “sign off” on the TA’s evaluation. So my TA wrote the letter, dropped it off to the professor’s room and the professor just wrote like literally one sentence about how the TA knew best and that all he could attest to was my grade which was “excellent/good/fair/etc.”

If you are hesitant, just go ahead and call admissions. Stick up for yourself when you call too - the main lady who answers the phone is often rude and not very helpful. If you aren’t getting the attention/answer you need, just call and confidently say “I would like to speak to an admissions officer about recommendation letters.” Once you reach an officer they are helpful and will actually understand the situation.

I hope this helped! Let me know if you have any other questions - good luck!!

Wow! Your reply was exactly what I was looking for. That put a lot of my fears to rest. Congrats on getting into Pomona by the way. I might shoot you a PM asking you about the school if you don’t mind…
