Poor Grades & Test Scores: Where to Go?

GPA is a low 2.7 at a competitive public high school in the northeast.
SAT is 1880.

Can anyone recommend some safety schools, as pretty much every other school on the list right now is a reach due to the low GPA?

ideally, the schools will be in large cities (NY, Boston, LA, SF, SD) rather than suburbs or rural areas.

Home state? Financial aid?

If you are at “a competitive public high school” your own guidance counselor surely has a nice long list of places where students like you have been admitted in the past. Go sit down with that person, and look at that list.

^ This.

Some more information:

Home state is New Jersey

Will not be applying for financial aid

Already had a sitdown with the Guidance counselor, who is only recommending regional schools in the tri-state area because her experience is limited to dealing with schools primarily in this area. I wanted to see what the CC community could come up with in cities like LA, SF, SD, CHI, etc…

CC community can help with that. That sort of GC is pretty useless.

A few more questions. Why a large city? Size of school? University or LAC? Course rigor? # of APs? Area of potential study? Do you excel in any particular subject area?

Columbia College-Chicago is essentially open admission. It has a dynamite location in downtown Chicago, near the lakefront. Happykid (Theatre Tech major) loved it when we visited. Many of the programs are in the fine and performing arts, but there also are some in management-related or other liberal arts fields. Page Not Found - Columbia College Chicago; There is very little financial aid available, but since you don’t need any, that wouldn’t be a problem for you.

Why don’t you use the super search engine on CC? in SF, there are a lot of small LACs you can go, try Mills in Oakland and USF
Here is a list of schools in CA

<a href=“List of colleges and universities in California - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_California

@artslover: not a bad idea, i’ll look into it!

@happymom: that’s an awesome suggestion, thanks!

@mrmom: Large cities offer more work/internship opportunities while studying; size of school is not as important as the size of the city, to be honest; university preferred, but LAC is fine too; Courses should not be too rigorous. Not looking for a top-50 ranked college here, just a reliable safety; Anly 2 APs; interested in computer science and business; Excels in programming (computer science & robotics, like arduino).

Take a look at UNC Charlotte for computer science. Not the large city like Chicago or SF but a decent size city for internships and also a major airport making travel easier.

Weber State University in Utah is also a virtually-open-admissions type of school. Probably one of the best super-easy-to-get-into schools I can think of. I know they have a good physics program.

Arizona State University jumps to mind-Phoenix is a great city, fun social scene, admissions more open.

Those aren’t exactly safeties but probably low matches based on your stats;
St Thomas and Hamline in St Paul, Loyola and DePaul in Chicago (perhaps Lake Forest, which is suburban but has a Chicago semester and it’s common for students to have internships in Chicago), St Mary’s of CA (San Francisco), USanDiego, UPugetSound, SJSU (in San Jose, big CA city), Ogglethorpe in Atlanta, UTampa (FL), Lesley in Boston.
True safety: UBaltimore, but I wouldn’t really recommend it.

Wait a second. Why you and your brother have the same stats? 2.7 GPA and 1880 SAT?
