It’s not a requirement. It’s a question. I would compare it to being asked if you have anything else. My D’s were not asked for pop but neither of them had a pop vibe during auditions. One was just cast in a very pop show but that was after years of working on that sound. It would never have happened 2 years ago.

There will always be students asked about things that are not listed as requirements. Others may not be asked anything. Thank-you, next. I really don’t see how being asked to do more can ever be anything but positive.

Again, I would only put songs in your book and offer to sing songs that you are 100% comfortable with and that show off your abilities well. If you don’t belt, don’t try to belt at an audition. If you don’t sing n a pop style well, don’t do it at an audition. What you do want to do though if that should come up at an audition – is say you don’t have a song in that style today, but you are looking for a program that will help you develop those skills. And tell them what other songs you do have. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Just sing what you do well and let them know you are eager to be trained in these other areas . Having said that, you should have extra selections in your book in case they would prefer to hear something other than or in addition to what you have selected. These extra songs should be just as prepared as your other material even if you are never asked to sing them. But don’t take something that you aren’t willing to sing or you don’t think shows off your talents.

Its not listed in our audition requirements (although it may be next year) and I don’t think its unfair. Its just another way for us to get to know someone. We think that each student is an individual and we don’t have an exact “thing” we are looking for. So if a student has no idea what to do with our request but everything else was great, we are still going to be interested. If we are on the fence and we ask them to sing a pop song, they get excited and nail it, that can tilt things in their favor. If every aspect of the audition process has looked uncomfortable for them and then we ask them to sing a pop/rock song and they look even more uncomfortable, it may be a sign that its not a right fit and that’s ok.

Now I have visions of my son singing something by SlipKnot (a death metal band)!

Can juniors join The Unified?

I think anyone can. I am a parent and joined.

I must be slow but I can’t get to that fb page. Do you search groups and then put the number in? Thank you for the help:)

I can’t speak for auditions now, but I know that the pop style is being taught now in many MT programs to keep up with the trend in contemporary musicals. Like Flossy’s daughter, my own doesn’t give off that vibe either, but she is working on it and it isn’t easy if it isn’t your thing but that’s what school is for.

My daughter was never asked to sing pop in any of her auditions two years ago but in MT years, she is a dinosaur now. Go with the latest info.
