I've recently discovered a lot of history about my dad's family and I think it would be perfect to describe for my college essay. Long story short, I've started to read a book about my great grandfather who was a prominent African Canadian man in his city (and still is today). His family came from slavery in Maryland and then escaped to Canada through the underground railroad. He did a lot of charity work through the church and was the first African citizen in Canada to be named man of the year. I could talk about how this information that I've discovered has helped me to really appreciate my family and my African roots, and so on.

bump… any thoughts?

Very unique. I really like the idea for an essay, just make sure its not a “history lesson” type of essay. Make it personal, somehow, and more focused on your personal growth rather than just about your great grandfather.

Overall, though, it sounds like an awesome essay.
