Sounds like alot of departments that hire students had already done so at the end of spring semester for the upcoming academic year. I am wondering do freshmen have a harder time looking for on campus jobs? Should I apply now or wait until I get to school in September?

I would assume that sooner is better. I don’t know how much the budget cuts will affect hiring for various jobs. You may not get the most glamorous job imaginable, or work in the department you want to, but if you want to work, I think you can probably find it. H worked in the dishroom at the dining facility in school. NOT a fun job, but it paid the bar tabs.

I know plenty of my friends got jobs on campus in their second semester of freshmen year and fall semester of sophomore. Places like Adele’s and ERC are always looking for new employees, so I’d say it’s very possible. And if you were to go off campus, there are plenty of restaurants and shops within a five minute radius, such as the shopping plaza with Noodles and Co, ColdStones, Boston Market, etc.

thanks everyone for the responses :)

@BruinsJEW, how about fall semester of freshmen year? are there likely opportunities for freshmen to get a job in the fall?

this taken from the umd career center website
“Most offices do the bulk of their hiring in September”
is this true? so does this mean I should apply september to maximize my chances?

Yes, you should apply as soon as you get to campus. (if you can do it via online methods, I’d do it now).
