Possible hook interview?

My interview went extremely, extremely well. My interviewer basically told me I was one of the top individuals he/she ever interviewed, then proceeded to list off everything in the interview I had done correctly and why he/she was so impressed. He/she told me that any school would be lucky to have me, and that he/she hopes that all the schools I applied to are smart enough to take me.

So my question is....does any of this even matter in the application process? If she turns in a glowing report, will it be of any help? My stats are "Yale worthy" btw (2300+ SAT, 4.0 GPA, specialized extracurriculars)

A great interview is not a “hook”.

Glad it went well and you feel encouraged. Good luck

A glowing report is nice, but not a big boost, whereas a lousy report can sink you.

I agree with the other post.

“So my question is…does any of this even matter in the application process?”

The interview is universally ranked by admissions directors as the least important part of the process.

For an interesting perspective on college interviews, see: [Young, Gifted, and Not Getting Into Harvard - New York Times](Young, Gifted, and Not Getting Into Harvard - The New York Times)

“Does it matter”. Yes, it’s nice to have a glowing report versus a neutral or negative one. But even the alum’s superlative interaction with you should be and can only be viewed as what it is: a subjective appointment of limited duration focused on a narrow band of your achievements.

In general, interviews are most useful when they impart to the file readers additional anecdotal info not previously discussed or fill gaps that may be missing from rec letters or other areas. It’s safe to assume that other areas of your file are strong and the report will tend to confirm that – and that’s a good thing.

But if, in the overall context of applicants, your file doesn’t grab out at readers or is similar to many others, even the glowing report won’t salvage it. Tough to hear but that’s been my experience.

Best of luck to you however. Enjoy your senior year!

Interviews are generally used to sift out the possible ‘bad’ applicants, not search ‘good’ applicants. A favorable interview, however, definitely does not hurt, and, with Yales low acceptance rate, it might just tip the scales in your favor!

Good luck!
