Possible Move for Job after D's Senior Year

My company told me that I need to move to a new location (different state). I told them I would not move until my D had completed her senior year in HS (which she is starting this week!)

My question is what affect would a move to a different state after her HS Sr. Yr, but before her College freshman year, have on the classification of in-state residency?

Also, she will likely make National Merit in the state we are in now, but probably would not make it in the state we would move to because of a higher threshold score in the new state. Would that affect her potential NMF scholarship?

It feels like a move after HS but before college leaves us in limbo.

Call the college board regarding the National Merit status. Assuming you stay put for the senior year, I expect that it will be your current state that counts.

As for residency, talk to potential schools in your new state. There are probably some actions that you can begin to take in preparation for the next year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re OOS for a semester or two in your new state.

The UCs in Cali make it almost impossible to get in-state; even if you were to move to Cali, I think she would have to wait until junior year or something crazy like that to get in-state. You will have to check your current state’s rules as well as the new state’s rules. FWIW, I would never depend on just one person’s oral answers; I would check and double check on the residency rules because it can be hard to know the competency of the person you are talking to.

I know families that maintain two residences or have the senior live with another family so that kiddo doesn’t have to move senior year. No ideal answers.
