Okay so here is the dealio! I applied to UNC Chapel Hill, which has been my dream school, received acceptance, and my grades were amazing freshman through junior year. Not to mention I had a crap ton of extracurriculars outside my academics. Anyway, my senior year was extremely difficult for me because my mother was assaulted in September 2013 by someone I considered my father and naturally I had to attend court various times throughout the school year and along with reliving the night of the assault. My family is now torn apart, my mom is in debt because of her lawyer, and is in the process of moving to Colorado. In addition, my grades dropped and I received a letter from UNC-CH stating that my enrollment was at risk.

I was wondering whether the reason I just stated would be enough to convince the admissions department to confirm my enrollment rather than rescind it. I am terrified and have already received various scholarships that I worked very hard for and I am just really frightened that I won't be going to college.

This is what my grades for my senior year looked like:
AP Psych: D
AP Calc: D
AP Calc (2nd semester): B
H. Spanish 3: C
Visual Arts: A
H. Pharmacy Technician: B
Yearbook: A

Any responses or advice would help! Thanks!

Don’t ask anonymous people on the Internet what to do. Call UNC right away! You should have a contact name and number on the letter you received. Be prepared to set up a face-to-face meeting, if necessary. Do whatever it takes. Not one person on this site can do any of this for you. Do you have a good relationship with your high school guidance counselor? It might be tough to get hold of him or her with a holiday weekend approaching, but see whether you can get the adviser to speak directly with someone at UNC, if you are confident that (s)he has your back. What about a trusted family advocate? Your lawyer apparently isn’t on great terms, but would there be a social worker who can back you up? You are the one whose future is at stake, and you should first call UNC to see whether they are planning to rescind and what you can do to prevent it. I can tell you to chill out, but I won’t and I hope you’ll ignore anyone who gives you that advice (unless it’s an authorized official at UNC).

You need to talk to someone at UNC PRONTO! 2 D’s on your transcript is serious and may well be cause for getting rescinded. Let them know about your mitigating circumstances and anything you’re willing to do to amend your grades, such as retaking the classes at a CC or online. It’s July now, kind of late–get in touch with them ASAP. Don’t wait until they contact you!

Best of luck!
