Very low-income family.
What can you afford? Safeties need to be affordable…
@AcceptableName NE. I’m looking for some out of state options if possible as well.
? If you’re very low income, then how can you afford $15k-35k per year? Who in the family is going to pay that for you?
@mom2collegekids I thought that meant how much I would be okay with taking a loan for.
You can only borrow $5,500 as a freshman.
Which URM are you?
@mom2collegekids does that include fafsa?
Thru the FAFSA app, you will only be able to borrow $5,500 as a frosh.
5500 frosh
6500 soph
7500 jr
7500 sr
you can’t borrow much because you’re a kid with no assets and no/little income
Which URM are you?
@mom2collegekids okay, so I guess that’s how much I could afford… I will try to do a work-study program as well if available. Or take a year off and save money.
Forget about the year off. You couldn’t earn/save enough cover a shortfall for 4 years of college.
You need large aid. If you’re very low income…
After filling out FAFSA, you’ll get about:
5700 Pell Grant
5500 loan
2000 hopefully work study IF you submit FAFSA as early as you can.
For safeties:
Alabama would give you
Free tuition and 2500 per year if you’re a CS major and you apply before the Dec deadline. This is assured for your stats.
With the additional aid from feds (FAFSA app), you would probably have your costs covered. You could work over summers to cover any loose ends and buy books.
This is a safety for you.
URM? Are you AA? Hispanic? American Indian? what?
@mom2collegekids I apologize, it appears I have been misinformed. I’m not technically a URM.
ok…I was checking because I was wondering if you qualified for National Achievement Scholar or similar for extra merit money.

3.85 HS GPA and 30 ACT gives a full ride at:
Tuskegee
Florida A&M
Prairie View A&M
Increase the ACT to 32, and you can add:
Troy
Howard
Louisiana Tech
Some other schools will give you full tuition with your current stats; you can probably combine a Pell grant, federal direct loan, and some work earnings to cover the rest, though it would be more of a stretch than a full ride (where you may need just the Pell grant to cover miscellaneous expenses):
Alabama
Alabama - Huntsville
Troy
Howard
Others will give full tuition with a higher ACT:
Mississippi (33 ACT)
Temple (32 ACT)
