Possible to be carolina covenant scholar sophomore yr?

Hi, right now, my financial aid is not 100% covered by UNC but next yr my family predicts our income will really decrease with the closing of our restaurant . Is it possible to have all my expenses paid as a sophomore by the carolina covenant when i apply again for fin aid next yr? Or is the program strictly set aside for freshmen and transfer students only? Thanks.

My understanding of the Carolina Covenant is that it’s for historically low income students, so having one year with a low-to-zero EFC wouldn’t necessarily qualify you. However, if you do have a zero EFC, you could get 100% grants if you’re lucky. Most likely, if you have a low EFC, you’ll get the majority of FA in grants (Pell and Institutional) plus federal sub and unsub loans. Carolina really has fantastic FA in my experience, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it. You can always appeal if need be.

If you qualify sophomore year, I don’t see why you wouldn’t become a carolina covenant scholar. If you’re unsure contact the financial aid office and double check, it’s definitely worth it if you get into the program. I’m the opposite of you; I qualified my freshman year and now that I’m a sophomore I didn’t meet requirements due to a decrease in the size of my household. I still received grants and only need to come up with about $4000 which is great. Good luck!
