My application for my 2nd choice just changed to "Your application is being carefully considered" They just started evaluating my application less than a week ago so I'm not sure how I feel about this. However, they have not looked at my application for my 1st choice college. My second choice college is CSE and my 1st choice is Carlson. If worse comes to worse, I was wondering if it were possible in any event to be declined from CSE and accepted to Carlson. Nervous but hoping for the best.

That’s a good question but everyone know’s that CSE is more competitive than Carlson. If Carlson is your first choice and you have the credentials to get into CSE, you’ll be admitted to Carlson and never hear anything from CSE. If I understand correctly, they don’t even look at your 2nd choice unless you’re not qualified for your first choice.

For instance, when I applied last year, I had CLA as my first choice and CBS as my second. When I got my acceptance letter, it strictly said “You have been accepted to CLA” and didn’t address anything about CBS, nor did I ever hear anything about CBS.

I think, but don’t quote me on it, that if you apply for two competitive colleges (like Carlson and CSE) on your application and you’re not qualified for either, they might offer you admission to CLA if you qualify for that rather than point-blank reject you from the university.

You mentioned that they don’t even look at your 2nd choice (to your knowledge), but I’m still waiting for them to update my Carlson materials which they have but it just hasn’t updated to “We have forwarded your materials… etc… to Carlson” The only thing that changed on my application tracker was February 23rd when it said "We have forwarded your materials etc… " for CSE. Carlson still has the “Before we are able to make decisions we must receive all materials” So in my case they’re evaluating me for my 2nd choice without even looking at my 1st choice yet. Any input?

OP,

it appears they looked at your fist choice and passed (maybe for now). This is why you are being considered for your second choice. If the second choice passes on you, UofM will most likely consider you for CLA. Keep in mind that depending on how many students decide to matriculate at CSE, you still will have a chance to eventually get accepted to CSE.

^ When you say they passed on my first choice you mean they did not accept me? It doesn’t seem like they even looked at my first choice because it still says “Before we are able to make a decision we must receive all materials…etc.” I called admissions last week and the lady I spoke with told me that they have all my materials but it takes 7-10 days to update on the application tracker.

That is what I meant.

I do think you were considered for the first choice, but the tracker was not updated online. Keep in mind, that your first choice passed on you for now. They might still consider you on a space-available basis and remaining applicant pool.

You can also transfer later if you keep your gpa up and meet program requirements.

Okay thanks for you input! Just gonna wait out the week and check my mailbox for an acceptance letter (hopefully)
