I am a Junior at a competitive private school in Baltimore (one of the Roland Park five), and I am considering taking a post-graduate year at either Exeter or Andover. What would be the merits and qualities of taking this, and would it improve my chances for entering better colleges?

Go check out the prep school forum on this site (farther down on the list) for some insight on PG years. And you'd list your EC's from your old school, too, if you got into Exeter or Andover as a PG - it's tough.

The majority of PG's are athletes and it does improve their chances of being recruited. If you just mean will the academic year improve your chances I'd wonder as the competition at top colleges is brutal from those schools. Don't know your current school but if it sends fewer than 30% to ivies plus, you might be better off where you are.
