Postmark vs Received

Some schools say that materials for Early Action/Decision must be postmarked by Nov 1. Others don’t really say, and just say Nov 1 is the deadline. Does this mean that all items must be in the admissions office by Nov 1, or be postmarked?

To put it in context, I am applying to Boston College EA.

Unless specified otherwise, we should expect that they mean the postmark date.

I would not assume that they mean that the Nov. 1 deadline is the postmark date, rather than the received by date. You should always check with the college you are applying to, in order to be sure. It varies according to college. It's a mistake to assume anything in the application process. When in doubt, contact the school and ask.
