So here’s the story: I started out homeschooled, but when my parents got too busy after the economy crashed I essentially became what they call “unschooled” for a few years. My parents told me that I didn’t need a diploma to succeed, but even at that age I knew I wanted to go to college, so I ended up enrolling myself in online school in the 7th grade (after I convinced my parents it was a good idea, of course). I ended up getting such good grades that I skipped 8th grade, and in 9th grade I got all A’s even with honors classes. Keep in mind that this was after a few years of not participating in school at all. I think this could show that I’m independent and a hard worker, but I’m also worried that it’s too much to put into one essay. What do you guys think?
well, it’s certainly an unusual path.
I worry that your essay could have the reader worrying about the possibility of real holes in your education-- things you should have learned that your online school simply didn’t pick up on.
I think I would look for other options.
There are many unschoolers who have attended college. A quick internet search will flood you with results of their experiences.
Since you returned to a more structured educational path, I don’t personally think it’s a relevant admissions essay. If you had remained an unschooler, and went on to do something wildly creative, unique or noteworthy, explaining your path might be more relevant. Most colleges are familiar with a variety of homeschooling styles.
