Potential Transfer: What are my chances?

Hello, I am considering transferring schools for the next fall, and I would like to know what my chances are for matriculation into Pomona College.

I am currently a second-year honors student at a large, public state university in the southeast. So far, I have completed 33 credit hours with a 4.00 GPA and currently am taking another 15 hours (which I should earn a 4.00 for as well). I am a premedical student, planning on majoring in Biochemistry.

For extracurriculars, I volunteer at the university's affiliated hospital twice a week (about 6 hours/week) and play intramural basketball. I also spend a lot of time working out and playing pickup basketball.

My high school test scores are as follows:

SAT: 2060 Superscore (660 Verbal, 760 Math, 640 Writing)
ACT: 30 Superscore (28 English, 31 Reading, 32 Math, 28 Science)
GPA: 3.95/4.00

Now, I am trying to transfer to a school that has a very strong science program, is far away from my home in the southeast, is relatively small, and that I can play basketball for. Therefore, I am interested in transferring to Pomona College.

What are my chances for admission into this school? Does my interest in playing varsity basketball help or hurt my chances for admission? Any opinions/advice would be appreciated. Also, I am open to other school suggestions, as long as they meet my desires which I previously stated.

I believe that it is harder to transfer into Pomona than it is to get accepted as a first-year. D was a transfer/exchange student sponsor and there were only about 10-12 students total in that group. Given that, if you really want to transfer to Pomona, I would encourage you to submit your application. You'll never know unless you apply.

Good luck!

jjay1, where exactly are you transferring from?

I'm at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

I earned a 4.0 last semester too, so now I have that GPA with 49 credit hours. Also, I am being recruited by the school's basketball coach, so hopefully that helps my chances.

There is no question that the basketball helps your chances. Athletic recruiting is important to Pomona.

On the surface, I'd wonder if you're such a perfect fit. Pomona is truly a bubble. The students take all sorts of courses outside of their major and participate in a wide range of activities. It's a true liberal arts college. The students are not the most practical bunch, although I'm sure there are some who intern at a hospital. It does appear to be the case that the science courses are very strong. Try to find out as much as you can about the student culture at Pomona. It will help your chances.
