I’m looking for a strong modern/contemporary dance program, with a focus on choreography! Additionally, I’m interested in a liberal arts university over a conservatory program, because I’m also interested in pursuing a degree in business administration. While I’m still investigating the schools I want to apply to and looking for schools that suit my needs, I eventually would like to apply to at least 1 BA & BFA dance program on the east coast and one of each on the west coast. Universities I’m currently looking at include:
Chapman University
University of California Irvine
University of Southern California
University of Michigan
Alma College
Elon University
Cornish College of the Arts
Arizona State University
University of Arizona
Loyola Marymont University
And others.
If you know can shed some light on any of these or know of any other schools that may be fitting- I would love the help!
@mkdance I can’t speak to the dance program at Cornish and Alma but I have been to their campus and UM. Cornish is very different from the schools on your list and it is an arts college. I would look if they have business administration because when we looked at them - there were very few gen ed requirements. Cornish is an artsy, urban campus. Alma is a small private liberal arts college. Very quaint and you would get a well rounded education. UM is a very large campus and obviously a top notch academic school located in a great town, with a great dance program and very competitive. Since you listed two Michigan colleges you may want to check Hope College and Grand Valley, both have very good dance programs where you should be able to pursue business administration. Hope is similar to Alma in that it is a small private liberal arts school but it is located on the west side of the state and the school is right in downtown Holland. It is not a far ride to the beach or sand dunes. Grand Valley is a medium sized campus, with lots of expansion going on, very near Grand Rapids.
My daughter is a dance major at LMU and many of the dance majors double major. It is hard but they are very supportive of this. Beautiful campus.
University of New Mexico has a really good contemporary program and they host guest instructors with international reputations from time to time. Go to youtube and look up videos posted by Vladimir Conde Reche. They are quite good. If you are in the Western States, UNM is part of the WUE consortium. The Anderson School of Management is also very well regarded and competitive. Hope this helps!
@Mkdance – I suggest that you also look at James Madison University in VA.
Goucher?
Have you looked at university of alabama tuscaloosa? They are building a brand new preforming art building? I’ve heard great things about their program.
