I've never really been inside a University classroom before so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Can you plug in a laptop in class or do you have to rely solely on your battery?

most of the class buildings are fairly old so they only have maybe 1-4 outlets per room. but yes, if you sit next to an outlet you can plug a laptop in.

in most classes...especially big ones, the outlets get taken quickly....get a macbook, it's battery usage is far superior to that of any PC

Do people use laptops in class nowadays? In my day, there would at most be 1-2 people with a laptop, and they'd be known as "the d-bag with the laptop."

ur old :P

yes alot of people use laptops in class now...i find it very useful in non-science/engineering classes where the prof is pretty much just talking at you. Didn't really encounter many of those in undergrad (just as well since I didn't have a laptop) but in grad school it comes up often. Of course if you aren't a science/engineering major in undergrad it'd also come up alot. It also comes in very handy when you want to take notes directly in powerpoint presentations.

I'm going to be in SEAS and I want to get a tablet but now I'm not sure since most tablets don't have great battery life

You really don't need a laptop in class, and it'll most likely just serve as a distraction if you do bring one.

"You really don't need a laptop in class, and it'll most likely just serve as a distraction if you do bring one."

This is true but if you have a very high attention span and your focus is up to par then don't hesitate to bring a laptop; not to mention the convenience of typing notes rather than writing.

typing notes is very convenient in certain classes

its true that a laptop can be a distraction....but honestly, some professors are super boring

the tablet PC is a HORRIBLE idea because:
1) you will look like a massive tool
2) if your still writing why not use paper....its just gonna be more annoying writing on the tablet

"1) you will look like a massive tool"

I don't understand how one will look like a tool. Can you clarify what you mean?

Life lesson: you are = you're. You make this mistake all the time, and a Columbia grad should know better.

It means you'll look like the UPS guy with the electronic signature thing... or your gym teacher with a bulky clipboard.

lol, its funny that when you are arguing with someone in one thread you try to get personal in another.....

this is not a "mistake" by any means.....it stems from too much IMing....same with writing u instead of you....do you really think i dont know that its actually spelled "you" or that its "don't" not "dont" and that in this sentence i should've used "it's" instead of "its"......i know....its just force of habit that i don't usually type appostrophes when IMing and then of course it translates to writing in forums

.....maybe you're just too old to understand

.....i hate people who think that you should write perfectly on a silly online forum....you know what i mean, i know what i mean, you know its not written correctly because i dont care so stop being an a-hole

Is your alleged reason for not using apostrophes that you don't want to type an extra key for whatever reason? 'Cuz, ironically, you typed an extra "p" in "appostrophes."

I don't buy it. Everyone knows u is shorthand for you, and it can't possibly mean anything else. To say that your is shorthand for you're is clearly inappropriate because your is a completely different word that means something completely different.

And if it's just a "force of habit" that you don't use "appostrophes," that doesn't explain why you use your instead of youre.

It's distracting to the reader when someone improperly does as you've done or screws up there/they're/their or too/to. Good writers naturally write well; they don't have to think about it.

wow ....get a life...seriously! there is no way i'm arguing about this because i know i'm right and YOU'RE wrong. and just like bringing up the nazis is a good copout in an online argument so is insinuating that an ivy league graduate doesn't know simple grammar

is this all cause i called you old? or is it cause you know i'm right in the other thread? lol

By now you shouldn't let IM'ing mess up your everyday diction. But still it doesn't give Columbia2002 the reason to nit pick at every single grammar error.

Both you & Columbia2002 are great examples of the typical arrogant Columbians

Columbians are typically arrogant? Never heard that one before...hipsters, tools, etc, yes but arrogant no. I think c2002 is probably venting outside frustration on this forum, he's only recently (past few days) been attacking the regulars. I don't actually think shraf was being a douche, just responding in kind as you seem to have done...so are you the typical arrogant high school kid?

No one uses tablets. Scribbling on your computer screen will just make you look dumb. At schools where everyone uses tablets (v.tech for example) it's more acceptable but everywhere else tablets are useless.

I don't distinguish between regulars and non-regulars. If someone says dumb stuff, they deserve to get called out. It isn't personal. And I've called out Shraf on a number of occasions over a long period of time.

I don't know. I take really horrible notes and a tablet would help a lot with that, especially in engineering classes. I don't really care much if people think I'm dumb just for having a laptop in class. That seems like a silly reason not to have something that could really help me in school.

I must say over the past few days C02 is syntax rather than message/thread focused, i found errors but no ambiguity in what shraf said / has been saying. and on an online forum as long as the message is unambiguously delivered - spelling, and a few grammatical errors make no difference whatsoever.

I, hopefully like most people, find it more embarrassing to my school to see an alum pointing out insignificant minutia, and dissolving thread after thread in petty irrelevant argument, than I do seeing an alum making spelling errors or missing an apostraphe.

Key note: "recently (past few days) been attacking the regulars."

That explains why he is considered what he is. No one deserves to be "attacked" no matter how dumb the statement or question is.

"Scribbling on your computer screen will just make you look dumb. At schools where everyone uses tablets (v.tech for example) it's more acceptable but everywhere else tablets are useless."

Who care how it makes you look. It's all about how convenient it is to you. If you're a swift typer then I see no reason not to opt for a laptop. In the end, it all boils down to how effective the laptop came into use when you receive your grades. Sometimes you need to disregard how people view you and focus on what will benefit you in the long run.
