Pratt vs. Parsons vs. RISD

Hey everyone... I'm interested in getting your input on these 3 schools. What's good/bad about each of these schools? Like academics, professors, location... and most importantly, which is strongest in GRAPHIC DESIGN? thanks!

Here are some links for you -- threads that discussed these schools on this board and compared them with other art schools and programs. I may have missed some, in which case other posters might bring them forward too. Sorry for the "highlight" on RISD but that was my search word key.

hey mackinaw... thanks for all the links, it's gonna take me a while to go through them all! they are really helpful!

I think the advantage of Pratt and Parsons is that you are in NYC and you already have that opportunity to do many internships while in school and actually get work experience while in school.

does anyone know how the 3 rank in prestige and in being more successful at getting a job at a design firm?

I think it depends on the major. I would think that Parsons would beat the other two in fashion design. If you want graphic design, RISD is considered the best in the US, although Pratt is no slouch. If you are considering architecture, industrial design or new media design (undergrad), Pratt may arguably have the edge. For other majors, it might depend on where you want to work. This is all my opinion however.

I concur with you Taxguy except for ID, in which RISD is arguably the best. (Going here in part on what my daughter reports now from working for 2 yrs. in NY and coming into contact with lots of grads from different programs.)

And I'm here to chime in and say RISD is consistently ranked among the top ten U.S. architecture programs. Pratt isn't even close. Although some people tout the proximity of NY firms (for internship opportunities), the truth is RISD students don't suffer any disadvantage there. The RISD architecture program is excellent.

I can't speak for how high Pratt is rated in Archtecture, although I do know it is highly rated and is well- respected in NY. I do know that they are top rated in interior archtecture. Like RISD, I don't think that any of Pratt's programs are bad.

thanks for the input guys... as for parsons, are any of the programs besides fashion design very good?

Regarding Parsons, I have a nephew who's majoring in illustration there. He thinks it's a good program but was disappointed a year ago when they seemed to be reducing the number of faculty in painting (another interest of his).

hey guys... i just visited Pratt and Parsons on monday... had an interesting experience. your comments have really helped me out a lot prior to my visit, so keep them coming!! :)

So what did you think of Pratt, Fabre? Did you feel my review was right on target after visiting the school?

Don't forget to look at my RISD review in the RISD forum.

Yeah fabre, tell us more! I would to hear about your experience. :)

hey guys!! i'm finally back from nyc!! sorry i took so long to get back onto these forums... if anyone still cares, i might post up a lil review soon. :)

In response to Taxguy's recent Pratt post in which his D deceided not to apply to there.

Taxguy,
oh well... too bad I guess my D won't get to meet your D. With her stats your D pobably would have qualified for alot of fin aid. My D was a counselor at a sleep away camp this summer and said she can't wait to get back to school, or as she puts it "the civilization that is the city".
In fact my D will be going back early as she is on the Hall Council for her dorm and will be welcoming new transfer students. I guess so much is how things are perceived, when I brought up your D's concerns to my D, the things your D had issues with weren't even a concern for my D. She says she is learning so much, loves the profs and programs and the diversity of students she has become friends with and of course she loves the area and does not see any issues with safety, feels that the connections Pratt has to offer is superior and will be looking for a paid internship next summer so she can stay in the city. Though I should also add that my D is from a NY suburb and did alot of peer traveling while in HS and dormed and took classes at SVA when she was 16. Her comfort level might be different then your D's in regards to city life. Keep us informed and good luck to your D.

Yes, we were disappointed with my daughter's response. Everyone is different. I guess that is what makes the world go around.

I’m looking at Pratt and RISD for a masters in interior design/interior architecture. Both are very expensive… does your daughter have any comment about whether or not that investment translates into a higher salary? Better job opportunities? Does she have anything to say about the state of the job market right now? I want the best possible education, but it turns my stomach thinking about the debt I’ll be saddled with afterwards. Thanks!

jESSILYNN, I am sure that my daughter will tell you that kids are getting jobs. Just get a good portfolio and get some work experience while in college, and those that have both of these should get decent offers.
