What school is better for graphic design? Parsons, Pratt or RISD?

So I've been accepted to Pratt and Parsons (entering foundation year, but I'm going to be a graphic design major) and I've been placed at the top of the waitlist for RISD. What school is best known for graphic design?

I’d say that RISD is the best out of those three schools because it really provides a great foundation artistically and academically. It’s also ranked higher(usually as #1 for graphic design and fine arts) and has more prestige, but that may not matter to you. The only negative can be how structured the school is.

Pratt is better known for interior and industrial design, and parsons is better known for fashion design.

Anyways, congrats on your acceptances and good luck with RISD.

I’ve had the first year of the graduate program MFA D+T with the BootCamp at Parsons The New School in 2011. Thank God ! I dropped it and I transferred to Pratt Institute’s Graduate Communication Design program.

Parsons was literally rip-off ! I feel like their aim is just to get my money but nothing else. School’s facility is poor, classes are very crowded, class registration system is total chaos, and a lot more negative things to say. Advisers do not even look at your face, professors are very ignorant, students are very ordinary and immature, spoiled, they complain about any little thing to teachers and stab each other in behind, just like in the elementary school. This supposed to be a grad school !!?? Most of the student’s are not coming from an Art or Design background. Looks like Parsons is not carefully selective when they are selecting graduate students. Do they welcome anybody else who applies?? Maybe they think anybody can be an artist or designer. It is so wrong!! I felt like dying in that atmosphere.

Now I feel like I was reborn with Pratt Institute. I started creating again, which I totally forgot at Parsons. Pratt Institute gives much better feeling with much more professional attitude. Whatever problem I counted up there, we do not have in Pratt. First of, Pratt is much bigger school. It has a great campus in Brooklyn + Satellite Campus in Manhattan West 14 Street + 24 Hour open MFA Studios on Manhattan West 18 Street.

I’ll be more than happy to give more detailed information for both schools whoever wants me to. Just send me an email, I’ll respond right away.

Yes, from everything that I have heard, Pratt is much better than Parsons other than for Fashion Design, and you can even get good training in Fashion Design at Pratt too.

As for Pratt vs. RISD, honestly, I would take the one that is least expensive net of scholarships. Is RISD higher ranked than Pratt? Yes, but not by much. Pratt also has a number of advantages over RISD. They have several concentrations within the graphic design field, which offer you more options. Pratt is also much more open to taking courses outside of your major. Finally, Pratt is located in NYC,which is fabulous for connections, internships etc. This is why I am recommending that you take the least expensive choice.

RISD was just ranked number 1 Design school in the world. Enough said.

[The World’s 25 Best Design Schools - Business Insider](<a href=“The World's 25 Best Design Schools”>The World's 25 Best Design Schools)

DON’T JUST GO BY RANKINGS! Did I say that with enough emphasis. Pratt has a great program with many choices within the graphic design curriculum that RISD doesn’t have. Check out each school.

Your education is what you make of it. No school will turn you into an excellent artist and designer. You have to take the initiative and get the most out of whatever choice you make.

Tax guy recommends visiting each school. That’s the only way to make up your mind, imo.

Noting that the poster asked which school is best known for graphic design, I think that it is clear that out of the three schools mentioned, RISD has the most prestige. So if you are looking for the most well known and are not considering other factors, RISD would be your choice.
