Hoping for a swift and complete recovery for this fourth year Tulane Med student who was shot when trying to break up an assault. Tulane students are the best.
Oh my gosh that video is chilling. Definitely praying for this very brave med student. Wow.
The better plan might have been to stay in the car while making the phone call.
Maybe, but the criminal was dragging a female victim. Would you want someone just to sit in the car if that were your daughter @JustOneDad?
Praying
@jym626 Yes. Assuming Mr. Gold had no other tools at his disposal, other than that phone, it would have been much better for him and the victim if he had stayed in the car.
We will agree to disagree on this one, JOD. If your daughter were being dragged away by a thug and there was someone there who could and would intervene, you’d want them to just sit in their car. Um, ok.
And am guessing you are assuming the NOPD respond pronto quick.
Yes. Using their phone. On the line to 911. How many times do I need to say it?
So they should sit in their car and call 911. Or should they pummel the thug with the iphone?
(that was not serious)
And again-- the NOPD is unfortunately often pretty busy. They may not respond PDQ. Look up their average response time. Its a bit disappointing.
And regardless, this is what this brave person, who is trained to save lives, did. I applaud him and wish him a very speedy recovery. That is the purpose of this thread.
Without sound on the video it’s hard to know the complete picture.
All I know is that that student was brave, and he was very lucky he wasn’t killed. Looked like the guy tried to shoot him again.
@jym626 I don’t think a woman should have any tie to a man for this courageous action to be justified, though I see what you intended to mean
With that said, any decent human being would have helped. I completely agree with you.
Yes, Southfloridamom. Sadly, the perpetrator did try to shoot him again. Several times. Fortunately the gun jammed.
I am not sure I follow your first sentence, Chopinspiano. Tie to what man? The bottom line here is this brave med student tried to save a woman being dragged away by a crook. Kudos to him. I wish him a quick and safe recovery.
I agree with @justonedad, the smart thing to do is to call 911. However, the heroic thing to do is to intervene.
@jym626 Saying things like “if she was your daughter what would you have wanted to happen” is often used as a justification. It shouldn’t come down to that. Women shouldn’t have a connection (a tie) to a man for someone to gain sympathy. @QuintoSol Wasn’t he on the phone right as he got out of the car?
When you see this on the street at 4:30 am, it’s typically a Very bad idea to step into the middle of that. I’m sure it’s different in New Orleans, though.
And, yet, he very nearly lost his own. Would have if the thug wasn’t so incompetent.
I’m sorry I have to point out that medical school “training” has nothing to do with “saving lives” in this manner.
Please go derail a different thread, JOD, and leave this one alone. You have no idea what in this young man’'s makeup or training led to his brave decision to try to save this woman, but most in healthcare are in helping professions because they want to help others. So whether it is his underlying ethical, core beliefs and/or his training in the helping profession, he was a brave man and I wish him and his family, and the Tulane community the best.
I’m sure that’s true. You appear to be ignoring the point of contention here which is what the most effective way to “help” would have been.
Since you specifically referenced his “training” and all we know about him is that he is a medical student, I was going along with that. I have some familiarity with medical school training. Do you?
There is no “point of contention”. This thread is about thanking the med student for his brave and heroic gesture. Next time you are in NOLA and in need of police assistance, set your timer and see how long it takes for them to come to your aid.
Have a good day.
And yes, I have familiarity with medical and healthcare training, not that it matters. Just stop already. Time to go find a fly swatter. This thread was to thank someone who took personal risk to help another human being. He is fighting for his life, and its usually respectful to acknowledge his effort, not step on his IV and tell him he was a jerk. Thats pretty declasse’. And it was posted in the Tulane forum to call attention to those of us who have a connection with the Tulane community. Maybe your comments might be better appreciated… somewhere else. Way to trash and derail a thread. Not nice.
