Some colleges seem to have 'pre-applications', or 'part I's. Some require the application fee with it, others do not. Is there any advantage to getting these sent off early, or doesn't it matter?

No. You would make a “better” impression than if you submitted it on the last possible day when all the adcoms are going nuts reading applications, though.

The main benefit to submitting those early is that they’ll open a file for you and your materials are less likely to get lost.

psychgirl, I think you’re asking the wrong question. You might want to ask, “Is there any benefit not to submit the pre-app now?” Or even, “Is there any benefit in submitting it later?” If the answer is no, then why not get a jump on things and cross one more to-do off your list?
