Is admissions as a freshman into the undergrad pre-business administration/undeclared highly competitive compared to other majors such as econ and engineering?

actually... pre-business isn't a major. If you apply as pre-biz, they just stick you in Undeclared.

so do a lot of people actually apply for undeclared/pre-business administration as freshmen?

If you're talking about admissions into Pre-Business coming from high school, then it doesn't matter if you put pre-Business, Undeclared, or any other L+S major down on your application. All majors in Letters and Science get equal weight in admissions into their college. Well.. except impacted majors.. but if you're applying to an impacted major on your application, you're basically treated as Undeclared in L+S. It's different for College of Engineering, where it does matter what major you put on your app.

As for applying to Business once you're actually accepted to Berkeley, most people apply in Fall of their second year and find out Spring of their second year. Some delay until junior year to declare, and pretty much no freshmen apply because they haven't completed enough prereqs yet. And yes, it's rather competitive. About half get denied, and that's not counting the people who didn't bother to apply because they didn't think they would make the cut and already switched to something else. You can check the site for the exact stats.

So do students in pre-business have any advantages over other applicants for admission into the 2 year haas program?

the Haas truths/myths page says it doesn't matter.

Yea, it doesn't matter. Again, pre-business is not a major. You are basically undeclared.
