For my college you needed a 35/40 on the Math Placement exam to be eligible to be placed in Calc 1, however I scored a 32/40 on the exam. I took both Pre Calc and Calc1 in high school and I struggled in Calc 1. I did resonably well in Pre Calc. My advisor gave me option to retake the placement if I would like. She said I would still graduate on time and that the Pre Calc course would count as a Math/Science elective later on.
Did the placement test results show which areas you know well versus not so well, so that you can review the latter before retrying the placement test?
If not, this quiz may help you figure out which areas you need to review if you choose to retry the placement test: http://www.math.buffalo.edu/rur/rurci3.cgi
Without knowing your college and major, no one else can say whether the math placement would affect your chances of graduating on time.
My major is Computer Science and I’m attending NYIT, and no the exam didn’t have test results.
https://www.nyit.edu/degrees/computer_science_bs/curriculum indicates that the major requires Math 170 (calculus 1), 180 (calculus 2), 310 (linear algebra). If you have to start in precalculus, you will take 170 in your second semester and 180 in your third semester.
This could be an issue if you want to take CS 155 or 235 in your second semester (these require Math 170) or CS 270 in your third semester (this requires Math 180). However, the course map at https://www.nyit.edu/files/advising/semester_maps_2018/ADV_DegreeMap_SOECS_ComputerScienceBS_2018.pdf does not suggest taking those courses that early.
If you do need to take precalculus, you would presumably have to forego the general elective listed in the course map.
I sort of understand, but I’m still unsure what I should do.
See if you can get hold of a syllabus for pre-calc. Think about whether you are completely comfortable with those topics, or if a refresher might help you do better in Calc1, particularly since you struggled with it before. College pre-calc might not be all that similar to the HS class of the same name.
Think of these math classes as a foundation - do you want the base of your foundation to be shaky, causing every level above to also be shaky? Or would you be better off shoring up that foundation?
Sounds good, yeah recently I’ve been struggling in math bot mainly because I stopped paying attention and staying because senior year of high school made me become lazy, I just got confused because I thought it would’ve thrown me off track for graduation.
Retaking the placement is a good idea. Double checking never hurts.
^^^ Right. If you place into Calc, great. And if you don’t, then you don’t.
If you had taken Calc 1 in HS and not done that great, I would take it again in college.
I would use some khan academy and definitely retake the placement test so you can be more on track in college.
