I am looking to apply to the NYU precollege program, but it is very expensive. For those of you that have done precollege, how much scholarship or financial aid did you get and what program were you in? Also did you dorm?

If you’re serious about being pre-med, going for something as luxurious as NYU summer pgm probably isn’t the best use of your time. I’d look for the best paying job possible.

EDIT: I take that back – any expensive pgm would be utter madness.

Well the main reason i want to do precollege is because it will help me get accepted in to NYU. The college is very selective, so any advantage i would have over other people would help.

“Well the main reason i want to do precollege is because it will help me get accepted in to NYU”

I’m glad that’s your reason because now I can talk you out of it. That program will assist your admissions as much as you working at McDonald’s this summer. I’m serious. Just do a search on “expensive summer programs” on this or the Parent’s forum.

They play into the insecurities of students like you and your family. They convey no extra advantage since the admission to these seeming-lofty programs is mostly based on the ability to PAY and only minimal academic ability.

It’s for rich kids who want to summer in NYC and hang out at a great college. If you think it’ll help your chances, you’re fooling yourself. You’re better off cramming for one more super shot at the ACT or SAT.

On the NYU website it said that this would help me get in to it, but I guess they just wrote that to help bring in potential students. Alright thank you, you just saved me around 10k.

Although I don’t know the NYU specific policy, I think most colleges do look favorably on summer college programs. I agree a job would also look good, and I wouldn’t pay all that money just for a potential slight advantage, but attending college over the summer, especially taking hard classes, is certainly worthwhile.
