Pre-Health - AP credit vs. re-take the class

I may score high enough on my Chem AP exam to get credit for Chem I and II.

However, after listening to Rob Borger from the Pre-health Advising Office at Freshman Orientation, it seems I may be better off re-taking Chem I and II in college and trying to get the A's. He says Med Schools look for high GPAs and would rather see a "grade" for a class, rather than a "credit".

This advice seems to be at odds with undergraduate advising, who encouraged me to take the credit.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Well, I am also in a similar situation.

It would be a great GPA booster if you already knew the material, so if you have the time for it I’d say take it. But I’m looking to double-major in two unrelated fields so I won’t have the time for it.

My advice in general is to take the credit when it is not your major, and take the class when it is. However, if you are going to be a pre-med chem major, and you will have lots of Chem above this level, ie you will start with organic, and have physical chen, analytical chem, biochem, then it is not a big deal.

If you are going to be premed, but especially NOT a science major, you need to show that you are strong in the sciences by taking classes, not just taking credits. So plan on taking more than just Organic I and II and lab and Biochem. Get two other chemistries in. When it comes time apply to medical school, you will be ahead with CLASSES TAKEN AT FSU not just AP credits.

For gifted students, it is not hard to get Bio I & II, Chem I & II, and even Physics I & II by AP credit. But if you are planning to apply to med school, you are going to need to take higher level classes to make up for credits received for AP classes.

Thanks sunnyflorida.

I am a pre-med Biology major.
