I am a biochemistry major (pre-med) applying for REUs this summer. After undergrad, I want to pursue a MD/PhD degree. Is it okay to include my medical interests in my personal statement? I was told to not mention going into medicine, as these programs are looking for future scientists; however, I want to do both. Thank you!
It should be OK to mention MD/PhD specifically in your PS so long as you emphasize the PhD & research aspect of your interests.
But you are right that these programs are for future scientific researchers and “doctor” (meaning physician) is a dirty word at some of the programs which are not at all interested in having pre-meds trying to buff up their resumés by attending them.
D2 did 2 summer research programs (Amgen and NIH). Both programs arranged opportunities for her to meet and interact with MD/PhD students and were supportive of MD/PhD applications.
Be aware that some REU and other summer programs specifically prohibited participants from engaging in pre-med type activities (MCAT prep classes, shadowing, clinical experiences) during the program.
When my son was applying to REUs, he was specifically told not to mention his med school interests. He was told that the REUs are looking for future scientists, not future doctors.
Since you’re interested in a MD/PhD that may be different. However, it may be safer to simply stress the PhD aspect.
Thank you all for the advice! I was just recently accepted into my top choice!
Great news! Congratulations @microbiolover
