How pre-med at ASU? I got accepted to ASU-Tempe for the Fall 2012 and just wonder is there a lot of opportunites doing research, volunteer hospital, etc. Plus how does medical school look at ASU?

Tempe has more than adequate resources for students interested in pre-med. There’s a hospital a few blocks away and the Mayo Clinic Phoenix branch, which has some internships for ASU students. ASU is a research 1 university, and thus has many opportunities and puts a substantial number of students that desire to do so into the prestigious fellowships (goldwater, rhodes, etc) every year. I had no problem obtaining what I needed to get into medical school there, nor did I find that medical schools had a problem with my “party school” university, even the big daddies.

I’m by no means certified in pre-med at ASU, but I have definitely heard that the U of A has greater strengths in the pre-med program there. While I would never encourage you to be a Wildcat, you should go to the place that provides better opportunities.

Arizona State has a smaller, but still large number of applicants to medical school each year (300 at UA 200 at ASU). Since people’s interests change, I would not choose ASU vs UA over just their pre-medical programs. All you need to consider in that regard is if a given school has the adequate resources that you need, but your overall impression of a school, the location, and the price should take priority in my opinion.
