For starters, I have already read the info here: http://www.uah.edu/science/current-students/pre-health/faqs

However, I was wondering if any current students or recent alumni or parents could comment on the med school acceptance rate of undergrads from UAH?
How about the quality of the pre-med requisites there (ie General Bio, General and Organic Chem, Physics, etc)?

I know Bama (Tuscaloosa) has good pre-med advising from reading threads under the Tuscaloosa forum, but Huntsville is a bit closer to home for us.

Thanks

Nerdyparent, although my son is not a pre-med, he does know some, including one on the track/cross country team with him.

The quality of the pre-med requisites is top-notch, he said. It is a STEM school, therefore, they pride themselves on their sciences. Is it tough? Oh yes, he said. My son had a physics class this fall that started out with about 125 students. It ended with about 80. Weed-out to the max. Lots of students who wanted to be engineers/pre-meds are no longer pursuing that course of study. My son, who wanted to major in math and econ, had no trouble in physics. In fact, he got an A+. He, however, changed course in his math major and made it a minor, because he just hated the computer science requirement. Instead, he added a finance major to the econ major and may add an accounting major, too.

That said, my son added that there are plenty of opportunities for students interested in research and internships. In fact, the dean of the College of Business said they have more internships than students. What a nice problem to have!

My advice is this: Go see the school. Make an appointment with someone in the College of Science. Learn about what is available. Go see a dorm – my son is living in the worst one one on campus, and still he has his own room and shares a bath. Go eat in the Cafe – Wednesdays are Fried Chicken Wednesdays, and people from all over Huntvegas go to the school for lunch! It is that good! There is a lot to offer at UAH, but you need to go and see it for yourself.

One more question - regarding your son - can you comment on the quality of the finance program? Do you know if UAH has a curriculum that prepares finance majors for a CFA?

Thanks

My son says that the finance program is excellent and offers a variety of concentrations. In fact, when we were at orientation, the dean of the business school learned that one of the freshmen in the room was a basketball player. She immediately said, “Are you going to major in finance. We must have seven or eight basketball players in finance.”

So it is a popular major with student-athletes, as well as others.

You would need to e-mail the department chair, Dr. Allen Wilhite, to find out the particulars on a CFA program.

It looks like your questions have been answered! However, if you would like to speak to a UAH representative about any issues or questions, we would be happy to assist you all at any time!
Best of luck to you and your student!
