Pre-Med At NU

I keep hearing about the cut-throat competition of NU's pre-med program. I was wondering if it is truly very very very challenging to maintain a good GPA in pre-med at NU? I do not want my GPA to be hurt so badly that I will not be able to get into medical school at all. For instance, I know this kid who got a 35 on his ACT, but upon entering NU he got Bs and Cs his first semester, thus hurting his GPA. Also, I would like to have the comfort of having another major to fall back on if medicine does not work out for me. I also want the time and the opportunity to study abroad and to take easier classes during my MCAT year. Is this asking too much for NU? Is pre-med at NU really as hard as I have been led to believe it is?

edit: This is coming from a person at NU who has yet to take a science class, so those reading this take it cum grano salis

Pre-med is hard, but it is hard everywhere.
Do not take the kid you know as the end all of intelligence; college is a place where many people have to deal with time management and the temptation to do things other than study, especially freshman fall when you are eager to make friends.
If you can sit down and study, and realize when you need to truly buckle down, I feel you should be able to achieve the grades you want, provided that in your heart the practice of medicine is a path you wish to take.

see...the thing is that I'm not the most gifted person when it comes to science to begin with. I'm not a genius in science, I have just work hard for my grades. I just don't know if I'll be able to handle the competition for pre-med at NU.

sorry...i just*

don't get me wrong...i know i'm smart, but I didn't get a 36 on my science ACT like some other people that go to NU

r u kidding? the science section of the act actually has something to do with science? maybe i should start rethinking my major then. i mean i got a 35 in science section but i have never had a ounce of interest in the field. i highly doubt it correlates to a good science mind.

yeah, no, the science section is retarded
