Wondering if anyone could tell us more about pre med at NU? Experiences, results, anything, from anyone not in HPME.

I’m a Pre med student (current freshman), and I’m going to be completely honest. Pre med here is extremely difficult. It requires a lot of effort, discipline, and consistency. The curves aren’t great, the professors aren’t amazing, the exams are designed so you do badly on them, and if you think just going to lectures and doing a couple practice problems will give you an A, you’re in for a rude awakening. I’m not trying to scare you, but I’m in the third quarter of Gen Chem and I can tell you that more than half the people who were pre med at the beginning of the year, aren’t pre med anymore. Some weren’t that passionate about it. Some didn’t want to do all the work and deal with the stress. Unfortunately, some were both passionate and hardworking and that wasn’t good enough. There are days where I wonder if I want to continue being pre med and if all the stress is worth it. The best advice I can give is to always keep in mind why you want to be a doctor, always go to review sessions, make friends with other pre med students (it helps out for studying and relaxing), study everyday, so you don’t have to hardcore study on one day. Most importantly, if you don’t get something, go to office hours and make sure you fully understand because everything moves really quickly and builds on each other.

Just so you all know - the vast majority of kids who are pre-med in any college wind up switching majors. It’s a cut throat major no matter where you go. It’s too bad, but that’s the way the medical system is set up. One advantage that NU has over some universities is that there are plenty of related majors to switch into.

These are helpful responses, thank you. Does anyone know the a recent percentage of NU students into Medical School? I saw some old figures, wondered if it is still around 80%?
