I'm a High School Junior and have me eyes set on a career in medicine. U-M is definitely one of the universities I'd love to attend.

Does anyone know what pre-med at UM is like? Is it harder, easier, than other universities of UM's standards/prestige? Also what about grade inflation/defaltion, what classes are like, and if it is hard to maintain a high (>3.7 GPA)?

First of if you’re looking for an “easy” premed school you won’t find one. Granted its harder some places than others it is by no means easy. That being said schools with prestige for premed students usually have more rigerous premed programs (thus they produce better pre Med candidates and thus gain prestige in that respect)

Now as for pre-med at Michigan, the advising and teaching is set at the level of Michigan’s Med school standards which means that it is aimed at trying to get its students into top Med schools. This puts a slight skew on some of the advising as they’ll push you harder to meet the standards of Michigan Med school. This is good because if you can meet those standards your in good standing as a candidate at Med schools of less prestige around the country.

Regardless, its not easy here but its not overwhelmingly impossible there are plenty of resources and most the professors care about learning and give good advice for succeeding in their classes

The old jingle is everyone at Michigan undergrad is pre-law, pre-med or pre-Ross UNTIL the first midterm, after which most become political science and econ majors.

Anyways, to answer the original question, the rigor of pre-med at UofM is ok. In other words, the difficulty is fair. It’s not grade deflated like some schools (ie uc berkley) and there are other career paths at UofM that are more demanding (ie electrical engineering). If you study hard, you should be able to do well.

here’s my advice to you. i really wish somebody told me this. GET CREDIT FOR AP BIO AND CHEM!

I wouldn’t say I’m a genius or super duper smart, but I got accepted into the honors program and I had good scores and grades coming in. In high school, I fell victim to senioritis and bombed my APs. I came into college taking BIO 171 (ap bio part 1) and got a B in it because I was not prepared for how big of a weeder class it was. Im in BIO 172 and it is harder than BIO 171. If i got credit for AP bio, I wouldnt have to take these two classes. that’d be two less grades on my science gpa that I wouldnt want there.
